Biography
Sir Edmund Hillary was a New Zealand mountaineer and explorer who, along with Tenzing Norgay, became the first confirmed climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
Early Start
Hillary discovered mountaineering at age 16 on a school trip. He became a beekeeper like his father while pursuing climbing in New Zealand's Southern Alps.
Challenges Overcome
Hillary was considered gangly and uncoordinated as a youth. He transformed himself through determination and became one of history's greatest explorers.
