Mr. Miyagi learned karate from his father in Okinawa, a tradition passed down through his family. He immigrated to the United States, where he faced the hardship of being placed in a Japanese-American internment camp during World War II.

Mr. Miyagi endured the loss of his wife and newborn son while he was serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. He also faced prejudice and the challenges of being an immigrant in a new country.
