A boy explores snow
First Caldecott winner with African American protagonist
"The Snowy Day" is a valuable book for young children as it celebrates the joy of simple pleasures and encourages curiosity and independent exploration. The book's use of collage and vibrant colors helps to stimulate a child's visual imagination. Furthermore, its depiction of a Black main character was groundbreaking for its time and continues to be an important book for promoting diversity and representation in children's literature.
Ezra Jack Keats (1916-1983) was a pioneering American author and illustrator of children's books. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Polish-Jewish immigrant parents. Keats is best known for his book, "The Snowy Day," which was one of the first mainstream children's picture books to feature a Black protagonist and for which he won the 1963 Caldecott Medal.
