Family adopts penguins
Humor; following dreams despite obstacles
Mr. Popper's Penguins is valuable for children as it explores themes of adventure, imagination, and family. The story of a house painter who receives a penguin from Antarctica provides a humorous and engaging way for young readers to learn about problem-solving, responsibility, and the importance of following one's dreams.
Richard Atwater was a Chicago writer and classics professor at the University of Chicago. He co-authored the Newbery Honor-winning book, Mr. Popper's Penguins, with his wife, Florence. After Richard suffered a stroke that left him unable to write, Florence revised his manuscript, which was then published in 1938 to great success.
